16th International Symposium on Schistosomiasis
"The 16th edition of the International Symposium on Schistosomiasis will be held from the 24th to the 26th August 2020 at the Arts and Conventions Center of the Federal University of Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil.
Organized by FIOCRUZ, the symposium will provide a forum for the various stakeholders, from research scientists to health managers to policy makers, with the goal of accelerating the elimination of schistosomiasis as a public health problem within the Health Unic System (SUS, in Brazil) and to assist the exercise of full citizenship by the population of the areas affected by the disease.
The topics covered by the symposium are broad and include basic, applied, translational and operational initiatives relating to disease control and elimination, (e.g., the development of vaccines, drugs, drug formulations and diagnostic tests), intermediate host control strategies, and the importance of using information, education, and communication (IEC) materials in communicating best water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) practices for the populations who suffer from or are at risk to schistosomiasis, as well as biological, epidemiological, clinical and public health aspects of the parasite and/or the disease.
The symposium will maintain the high standards and success of previous editions, which, historically, have been well-attended by Brazilian and overseas scientists, health care professionals, public health managers, coordinators of the Schistosomiasis Control Program (PCE-SUS) and the various secretariats from the Brazilian Ministry of Health. Most importantly, the symposium will continue to provide fertile ground for the many undergraduate and graduate students, and post-doctoral scientists who attend, thereby ensuring its critical role in both disseminating the latest information and facilitating new collaborative opportunities relating to schistosomiasis.
The symposium’s program comprises five conferences, ten round tables, twelve oral presentation sessions and one poster session. Free short courses will also be offered."
